April Travel Link Up

It's time for me to link up once again with Kelly, Emma, Rebecca and Polly for this months travel link up post. And this months topic is.... guilty pleasures.

guilty pleasure - something that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard.

My new guilty pleasure while travelling definitely has to be overindulgence... the over indulgence being that with food. I have been on a new weight loss kick lately and I have begun to start taking my health seriously for once, so food has been a major part of this transformation. I used to eat anything and everything that I wanted but now I have become more aware of what I am eating and how much of it. I also follow this up by hitting the gym three times a week and have been seeing some great results. I'm down 26 lbs and still going. So I am eating healthy and working out all the time but I have made the decision to not be as strict whilst I am travelling. I have left my travelling time open to indulge in some of the local cuisine and get a real 'taste' for each place I visit. It just means that I have to work harder the week before I go and for the week when I come back.

But you may be asking.... "is it worth it?" YES! It was definitely worth it to taste the chocolate and waffles in Belgium, the apple strudel in Vienna, and the meat feast in Poland! I love food and I wouldn't want to completely cut all that tasty stuff out from my life. It's all about moderation... but this post isn't for that so here are some of my favourite guilty pleasures I consumed whilst travelling.

waffles in Ghent

apple studel in Vienna

sausage and a potato pancake in Cesky Krumlov

tapas in Barcelona
cheese platter in Istanbul

I call this the Hungarian heart attack in Budapest
I'll be back to Spain in a couple weeks where I can't wait to go tapas loco again!

First time Vegas

After writing my first throw back post about my trip to Riviera Maya I started thinking about other trips I've been on that I could blog about as well that happened before I started this blog. So I whipped out my good old hard drive to see what pictures I had on it from past travels. This is how I stumbled upon some gems from Las Vegas.  I've been to Vegas twice, once in 2007 and then again in 2009 So begins another throw back to sin city in 2007.

The first time I went to Vegas was with my two cousins and their friend. We had wanted to take a little trip and decided Vegas would be fun since none of us had ever been there before. We stayed at the Flamingo which is in a great location tight in the middle of the main strip. And conveniently next to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville which I must say had the best mango margarita I have ever tasted!

mango margarita!
We spent our days wandering up and down the strip trying to see every hotel and casino we could and our nights were spent having some dinner and a few drinks at one of the many clubs around. I must say most nights I remember being so exhausted because we had walked around so much during the days. The weather was great and we got to soak up the sunshine out by the pool as well.

It was a great first time experience in Vegas but a very tame experience in comparison to my next throw back post of Vegas 2nd time around... coming soon.

Tasteclub - Chicks on Fire

I absolutely love food.... and even more than that I love going out to dinner. Which is perfect because my friends also love these two things as well. Hence the start of our new little group...

We decided to start our Tasteclub because it was a nice excuse for us all to get together and try new foods. And also to take advantage of the awesome deals you can get using the Tastecard. Since we wanted to make it a bit more exciting we added 4 simple rules to the night out...

1. Each person takes a turn planning the dinner place we will be going
2. This place must be kept secret to all the other members
3. You can't pick the same cuisine type as the person before you
4. The restaurant must be on tastecard

So hence this post is born because the first meeting of the tasteclub was in session last week and hosted by yours truly...

Tasteclub # 1

I can actually say that it was a tough decision to think of a place where we could go for the first one. We kept joking around saying 'it had to be good because it was the first one and to set the bar high.' So I decided to stay locally in our Islington area and went went a small place that I had heard about from a fellow colleague at work called Chicks on Fire.

When I looked at the menu it seemed to be just another version of Nandos... but in reality after eating there it was so much better than anything Nandos does. We opted to order the family feast which consisted of a tray of dips and breads to start, 2 whole chickens (jerk and fajita seasoned), with corn, 2 orders of chips, some coleslaw and rice and peas. It was soooo much food it only cost £29.95. Plus we got a couple bottles of wine with the meal and thanks to the tastecard %25 off the bill. The food was soo tasty and the presentation was amazing. I was plesantly surprised by how good everything was. I loved everything about the quaint little restaurant and as an added bonus they were playing some 90s pop music which we enjoyed.
